The best uptime monitoring tools in 2026, compared honestly

Spot Downtime, UptimeRobot, Better Stack, Pingdom, StatusCake, Uptime Kuma and more: free plans, real prices, and which tool fits which team, including where we're not the best pick.

· 6 min read · By the Spot Downtime team

Every uptime monitor does the basics: request a URL on a schedule, alert someone when it fails. The differences are in the details that decide whether it fits your team: how often it checks, where from, how alerts reach you, whether status pages and cron jobs are included, and what it costs once you outgrow the free plan.

This is our honest comparison, including where other tools are a better pick than ours. Prices are the published monthly prices as of October 2026; check each vendor's pricing page before you decide, because they change.

What actually matters when choosing

Check interval

Five-minute checks mean an outage can run for up to five minutes before anyone knows. For a side project, fine. For checkout or a public API, one minute or less is worth paying for.

Check locations

Tools that check from several regions can tell “down everywhere” from “down in Europe”, and filter out network blips by requiring more than one location to agree. Spot Downtime checks from one location and re-checks a failure after 2 seconds before alerting; if regional visibility matters to you, UptimeRobot, Better Stack, Pingdom and StatusCake all offer multi-location checks.

How alerts reach you

Chat and email cover most teams. If someone must be woken at 3am, you need phone calls, SMS or a push app that breaks through do-not-disturb. Better Stack includes calls and SMS. With Spot Downtime you route alerts through PagerDuty, Pushover or ntfy for that.

What's included vs sold separately

Status pages, cron job (heartbeat) monitoring, SSL expiry warnings and team seats are sometimes included and sometimes separate products. Add up what you'd actually need: an uptime tool plus a status page tool plus a cron tool can cost several times what one tool covering all three does.

Commercial use on the free plan

Some free plans are for personal projects only. If you're monitoring a business, read the terms: UptimeRobot's free plan, for example, no longer allows commercial use. Spot Downtime's free plan does.

Where each tool shines

  • Spot Downtime: website, API (with JSON assertions), DNS, TCP and ping checks, cron heartbeats, status pages with custom domains and 12 alert integrations, at $7 or $19 a month. The trade-off: one check location, no built-in SMS or phone calls.
  • UptimeRobot: the most generous free monitor count, if your use is personal. Paid plans became much more expensive in 2025.
  • Better Stack: polished on-call, incident management and phone alerts, plus logs. Priced per responder, so it grows with your team size.
  • Pingdom: multi-step transaction checks and real-user monitoring from a long-established vendor. No free plan.
  • StatusCake: uptime plus page speed, domain expiry and server monitoring in one account.
  • Uptime Kuma: free and open source, if you're happy to host and maintain it yourself (and to monitor the monitor).

Try before you commit

Most of these have a free plan or a trial. Point two at the same site for a week and compare: did both catch the same incidents, and which alerts would you actually want to receive?
