Healthchecks.io alternatives: cron monitoring plus everything else

Healthchecks.io is excellent for cron jobs alone. When it makes sense to monitor cron jobs, websites, APIs and status pages in one tool instead.

Healthchecks.io does one thing very well: it tells you when a cron job doesn't check in. It's open source, with a generous free Hobbyist plan of 20 jobs, and Business at $20 a month for 100 jobs with SMS and phone call credits (as of October 2026). If all you need is cron monitoring, it's an excellent choice.

The reason to look at alternatives is usually the rest of the stack. Cron jobs are one part of what can break. Most teams also need to know when the website, API or database goes down, and end up paying for two or three tools that each cover a slice.

Choose Healthchecks.io if…

You only need cron monitoring, want it free for up to 20 jobs, need cron-expression schedules, or want to self-host.

Choose Spot Downtime if…

You want cron jobs, websites, APIs and status pages in one place, with one set of alert channels and one bill. A job that stopped and the API it feeds show up side by side in the same incident history.

The heartbeat pattern is the same everywhere

Whichever tool you pick, the setup is one line at the end of the job:

bash
0 3 * * * /usr/local/bin/backup.sh && curl -fsS -m 10 --retry 3 https://example.com/ping/<your-id>

The && matters: the check-in only happens if the job succeeded. The cron job monitoring guide covers GitHub Actions, Kubernetes and failure reporting.

Other options

Better Stack includes heartbeats alongside uptime and on-call; UptimeRobot includes them on paid plans. See all the tools compared.

Monitor the jobs that fail silently

Backups, invoice runs and data syncs are the classic silent failures: nothing errors, nothing is visible, and you find out weeks later. Those are the first jobs to add a heartbeat to.
