4xx Client errors

429 Too Many Requests

The client sent too many requests in a given time (rate limiting).

Common causes

  • An API rate limit was hit.
  • Bot protection slowing down automated traffic.

How to fix it

  • Wait for the time in the Retry-After header, then retry with backoff.
  • Cache responses or batch requests to make fewer calls.
  • For uptime checks, a 429 still means the server is online.

Spot Downtime monitors count this as down and alert you, since visitors see an error. (The public “Is it down?” checker treats 4xx answers from big sites as online, because many refuse automated requests.)
